Bo Saris – The Addict: Silky Soul in Wonderland

Bo Saris is a soul singer based in Holland but making a big splash in the UK and USA right now.

His management came to me specifically because they wanted something a bit different for their lead single, ‚The Addict‘. The title instantly led me to pursue the theme of drugs, but I didn’t want to go the grotesque way of Trainspotting and Irvine Welsh. Instead we treated it with a nod to the psychedelic and Alice in Wonderland, by sending Bo on a tea-induced psychedelic acid trip.

Eat Me, Drink Me…

Its actually based on a dream I once had where I awoke in front of a selection of brightly coloured cups of tea, with each one sending me on a different sub-dream within the dream. My original nightmare also featured a cameo from Rolf Harris, and in retrospect we’re pretty lucky we didn’t contact him to be involved!

Wer hier meint, das Justin Timberlake seine Finger mit im Spiel hat, der irrt gewaltig. Ein Holländer gibt sich hier die Ehre. Boris Titulaer, Bo-Rush und aktuell Bo Saris (Mädchenname seiner Mutter) bereichert – chillingly beautiful – die Musikszene. In Venlo (NL) geboren, war Bo der Sieger der zweiten Ausgabe der niederländischen Castingshow „Idols“. Nach einer Reihe von erfolgreichen Alben in den Niederlanden, zog Titulaer nach London.

Seine erste Veröffentlichung unter dem Namen Bo Saris erreichte Platz 5 in den holländischen Alternative Music Charts im August 2012. 2013 erhielt er von Radio 6 den Soul & Jazz Awards.

Chillingly beautiful

„Watch out for the addict; he’s always trying to bring you down, down, down,“ cautions Bo Saris in his silky, soulful voice, delivering a message that’s grave but also chillingly beautiful. The London-based, Dutch vocalist has been quietly releasing music for a decade and, thanks to a new deal with Decca Universal in the United Kingdom, „The Addict“ is his ticket to a new, overseas audience. That’s fortunate, as the song is a welcome revelation.

„Personally, I believe every person has a form of addiction,“ Saris tells Billboard. „I had a few close friends of mine who were struggling very deeply with that. I was going through a rough time and I just wanted to write a song about it.“

Saris lists Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, Curtis Mayfield, Prince, and Michael Jackson as his primary influences. The sound of „The Addict“ is rooted in the past, but it’s pulled off with such skill and genuine emotion that — as traditional as it is — it cuts deep.
